Assistant Professor of Chemistry & Biochemistry

Joe Buonomo, PhD

Joe Buonomo (he/him/his) was born in North New Jersey. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Rochester in 2013, receiving a B.S. in chemistry while performing research with Prof. Dr. Daniel Weix, applying nickel-catalyzed cross-electrophile coupling reaction to novel substrates. He then moved to the University of Minnesota to pursue his PhD studies under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Courtney Aldrich as an NSF graduate research fellow, developing synthetic methods to enable medicinal chemistry campaigns and to design therapeutics for drug-resistant Mycobacteria. In 2018, he received his PhD in medicinal chemistry and moved to Stanford University to pursue postdoctoral studies as a Ruth L. Kirschstein NIH F32 fellow under the tutelage of Prof. Dr. Carolyn Bertozzi where he harnessed chemistry to interrogate the interface of the innate immune system and infectious agents such as M. tuberculosis, V. cholerae, and SARS-CoV-2. In 2022, he began his independent career as a bioorganic chemist at the University of Texas at Arlington. The unifying theme of his lab's research is the utilization of highly chemoselective processes to study biological systems. Outside of lab, you can find Joe out in nature with his camera, on his bike, or searching for the perfect wine to pair with every meal.
