Diverse Experiences Enrich Educational & Research Environments

At UTA, we are proud to be a minority Serving institution, where we put the capital S in Serving. UTA is amongst the most diverse campuses in the US (currently #3 for ethnic diversity) and serves as a Hispanic Serving institution (HSI) as well as being an Asian American, Native American, and Pacific Islander Serving institution (AANAPISI). UTA is committed to the ascendency of minority populations with a variety of initiatives that range from diverse faculty hiring and mentoring, increased scholarship offerings, to even improved training for the UTA police force. The outline of UTA’s plan can be found by clicking the photo on this webpage.

We recognize the undisputable fact that diverse teams are both more productive and creative.

We amplify the voices of the under-represented, and support these groups because they have not been afforded the privileges of historically-dominant groups in STEM. We reject the notion that these endeavors are discriminatory against the historically-dominant groups in STEM. We believe black lives matter and that women’s rights are basic human rights.

We foster trainee involvement in organizations such as SWE, SACNAS, and NOBCChE (Pronounced No-Be-Shay) to promote and support women, Chicano/Hispanic and black chemists. Additionally, we curate a safe space for LGBTQ+ identifying individuals and welcome all queer and trans individuals planning to engage in chemical research.

We support mental health and wellness. Undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral studies are mentally taxing. We help and support each other while recognizing failure is a common and necessary aspect of scientific research at the frontier.
